Correspondence, email, memoranda, interviews, reports, meeting notes, subject files, printed matter, photographs, and other papers primarily relating to Lawrence's years as chief of staff for U.S. Congresswoman, House Minority Leader, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Also documents his previous work as chief of staff for U.S. Congressman George Miller III and Lawrence's post-governmental career as an author and lecturer. Includes interviews and other files relating to Lawrence's book Class of '74: Congress After Watergate and the Roots of Partisanship (2018). Interviewees include James J. Blanchard, Thomas J. Downey, Ray LaHood, Abner J. Mikva, Pat Schroeder, Henry A. Waxman, and Timothy E. Wirth. Also includes files pertaining to Lawrence's unpublished book concerning the separation of powers during the Barack Obama presidential administration. Files created and maintained by Lawrence's assistant, Declan Cashman, chiefly document the functions and operations of Pelosi's offices. Subjects include the Democratic Party and Pelosi's leadership role in the party, congressional delegations (CODELs), elections, ethics, the federal budget and the debt ceiling, health care reform, the Iraq War, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's use of torture, and the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, Port Chicago, Calif. Ray LaHood was born on December 6, 1945, in Peoria, Illinois. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1971 from Bradley University in sociology and education. After graduating from college, LaHood worked as a social studies teacher in a junior high school. In 1972, he became the director of the Rock Island County Youth Services Bureau, a position he held for two years.
